Somatics is a field within bodywork and movement studies which emphasizes internal physical perception and experience. The term is used in movement therapy to signify approaches based on the soma, or “the body as perceived from within,” (Tomas Hanna). Somatic techniques support one’s dance practice through its emphasis on internal sensation rather than external observation. These practices are useful tools in learning to release habitual holdings in the body and to allow space for more easeful and enjoyable sensations in movement. All somatic hour classes are open for drop-in attendance to all level movers.
Tuesdays, 6:30 – 7:30
Led by Precious Jennings
These classes will be based on BMC ® practices including the organs and the Nervous system through the glands of the body. The Organs determine postural tone, which contributes to the internal organization to muscular coordination to express our bodies to the world and or performance. The glands of the body support us in many ways, and can be a bit mysterious and enigmatic, so we will ground through the organs first and then lighten into our highly expressive and light glandular bodies.
Wednesdays, 6:30 – 7:30

The Feldenkrais Method, often referred to simply as “Feldenkrais”, is a somatic educational system designed by Moshé Feldenkrais (1904–1984). Feldenkrais aims to reduce pain or limitations in movement, to improve physical function, and to promote general well-being by increasing students’ awareness of themselves and by expanding students’ movement repertoire. Classes are welcome to all abilities and are done lying on the floor on a blanket.
Yoga is an ancient system of wellness that aims to connect you with your innate capacity for wisdom, strength and joy. Derived from the Sanskrit word “yuj” which means “to yolk, unite”, yoga harmonizes the body and mind through the means of breathe, posture and meditation. Yoga classes are open to all level movers.
Mondays, 6:30 – 7:30
Led by Lyndsae Rinio
Lyndsae’s classes offer a slow and mindful yoga practice that emphasizes listening to one’s own body. Movements are flowing, but with time in each posture to work on alignment and breath. The slow and steady pacing of classes encourage strength building, safe flexibility and a calm mind.

6:30 – 8:00
Led by Erin Cowan
Somatic yoga integrates the body, the breath, and the mind with simple, easy-to-follow exercises, often performed lying down on a soft blanket. By voluntarily contracting and relaxing muscles with focused, gentle movements, this practice releases tension and discomfort in the body (sometimes experienced as low back pain, neck stiffness, poor posture, etc), frees the breath, and calms the mind. Somatic yoga is suitable for beginners and intermediate/ advanced practitioners. No prior experience necessary. No flexibility required. This 90-minute class will include a more detailed explanation of somatic yoga and how to practice it effectively, an hour-long somatic yoga practice, and a guided relaxation at the end.
Thursday, July 13
