Playlab

Playlabs provide artists and attendees an opportunity to explore their ideas in a lab type setting.  These labs emerged  from Lara Oppenheimer’s 2014 Link UP residency investigating the power of play as an act of creation.  Sessions are facilitated by artists across creative disciplines who share their creative process and generative questions within a field of play and possibility.    No prior experience or exposure to the artists’ work is needed and all Playlabs are open for drop-in attendance to all level movers.

Week One: June 26 – June 29
2:00 – 4:30
Presence Practices
Led by Rachel Bunting
Level: Open
Presence Practices incorporate every part of ourselves, from the intangibles like intuition and imagination to the finite matter of our bodies.  This series will pull from and reference many methods and philosophies, including Tantra, Kundalini Yoga, and the tao, specifically with the idea of “li,” an organic sense of order that might inspire a layered and mysterious performance space.  Together we will play with tangible objects; touch will transform into feeling so that space can become a heightened happening.  We will release and explore the voice as yet another possibility and limb of the body.  New images, stories and words will emerge and we will perhaps make ourselves feel infinite for some moments.

Week Two: July 3 – July 6
2:00 – 4:30
Feeling Into form
Led by Lisa Gonzales
Music by Hamid Drake

Level: Open
Feeling into Form celebrates improvisational practice as a process of making.   Balancing in-depth solo exploration with rigorous practice in spontaneous ensemble dance-making, dancers will physically engage the dialogue of process and product, individual voice and community, crafting and opening to the unknown.  Solo practice will expand our physical range as we feel our way into form.  Ensemble practice will organize us non-hierarchically and reveal to the collective new ways to hold complexity.

Week Three: July 10 – July 13
2:00 – 4:30
Technology of the Circle
Led by Onye Ozuzu
Level: Open
Technology of the Circle is a performance process that uses the circle as a structure for diverse dance improvisation practices. From Breaking, Afro-Cuban, Contemporary Ballet, House, West African, these forms will merge with contemporary dance and theatre improvisational techniques and emerge as a fluid tool for the crafting of layered, powerful, individual and embodied civic discourse.  Members who attend all four Technology of the Circle sessions have the option of participating in the informal showing on Friday, July 14th at 7:00 pm.
